Poland and Germany sign new defence cooperation agreement

Poland and Germany have signed a new defence cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening security collaboration between the two countries, particularly in response to evolving regional security challenges in Europe.

The agreement was signed in Warsaw by Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and his German counterpart Boris Pistorius, marking the 35th anniversary of the 1991 bilateral treaty of good neighbourly relations.

Under the new framework, Germany is expected to support Poland in reinforcing its border security, including efforts linked to the “Eastern Shield” project, which focuses on protecting sensitive areas near the Kaliningrad region. From July, German military personnel are also expected to assist in strengthening border-related security operations.

The agreement expands cooperation into several strategic areas, including cybersecurity, maritime security in the Baltic Sea, joint command structures, space-related technologies, and defence industry collaboration. It also emphasizes improving military mobility and infrastructure development across both countries.

Officials from both sides highlighted the importance of closer coordination in defence production and supply chains, underlining Europe’s need for greater strategic autonomy in military capabilities.

While the agreement marks a step forward in bilateral cooperation, officials noted that its scope remains more limited compared to other defence arrangements, due in part to political sensitivities in Poland.

The deal reflects broader European efforts to reinforce collective security and improve coordination among NATO allies amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
