Peru: New government to declare State of emergency in Lima after wave of violence
The Peruvian government announced on Thursday its intention to declare a state of emergency in Lima following a surge in organized crime violence that has triggered massive demonstrations, leaving one person dead and over a hundred injured.
“We will soon announce the decision to declare a state of emergency, at least in the Lima region,” said Ernesto Álvarez, head of the transitional government, after a cabinet meeting. Under the emergency decree, authorities will be allowed to deploy the army in the streets and restrict certain civil rights, such as freedom of assembly.
The protests in Lima on Wednesday were the most violent since demonstrations began a month ago across the Andean nation. Clashes between protesters and police resulted in the death of a 32-year-old man, Eduardo Ruiz, a rapper known as Trvko, and 113 injuries, including 84 police officers and 29 civilians.
Acting President José Jeri, who also presides over Congress, condemned the killing but claimed that a small group of agitators sought to sow “chaos.” On Thursday night, dozens of young people gathered with candles and flowers to pay tribute to the victim.
The head of police, General Oscar Arriola, stated that the officer responsible for the shooting acted independently and would be dismissed from the force.
Jeri has also requested special powers from Congress to pass emergency measures aimed at curbing insecurity, particularly targeting criminal networks operating from prisons, where extortion schemes are often organized.
