Peru cuts diplomatic ties with Mexico over Asylum for Former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez
Peru has severed diplomatic relations with Mexico following the decision by Mexican authorities to grant asylum to former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who is under investigation for rebellion.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela described Mexico’s move as an “unfriendly act,” escalating tensions between the two countries. The Office of the President of Peru, José Jerí, accused Mexico of “repeated” interference in Peru’s internal affairs.
Chávez is accused of involvement in the 2022 attempt by then-President Pedro Castillo to declare a state of emergency and dissolve Congress amid an impeachment vote. Castillo failed to secure military support, was removed from office, and arrested. Prosecutors allege Chávez acted as an accomplice in the attempted coup, seeking a sentence of up to 25 years. Chávez denies prior knowledge of Castillo’s plan.
De Zela expressed regret, saying, “We learned with surprise and deep regret that former prime minister Betssy Chávez, the alleged co-author of the attempted coup d’état, is being granted asylum at the residence of the Mexican embassy in Peru.”
Castillo’s family is now in Mexico, where authorities have reportedly expressed sympathy for the ousted leftist leader. The Mexican government has not immediately commented on Peru’s diplomatic move.
