Partial flight operations resume at Marseille airport after wildfire disruption

Air traffic at Marseille-Provence Airport resumed partially on Tuesday evening after being suspended for several hours due to a massive wildfire near the city. According to airport authorities, operations restarted around 9:30 p.m. local time to allow for late evening departures, arrivals, and select regulatory flights.

The airport, located in Marignane and ranked as France’s fourth-busiest, had shut down at 12:12 p.m. to allow firefighting aircraft and helicopters to operate safely, as the flames threatened the runway corridor.

"Firefighting efforts required complete access to the airspace above the runway," a spokesperson explained.

During the suspension, 48 flights were canceled and will not be rescheduled. Additionally, about 15 flights were diverted to other airports.

As part of the partial resumption, ten departures and nine arrivals scheduled after 9:30 p.m. were confirmed to operate.

Authorities said the situation would be reassessed on Wednesday depending on the fire’s progression. Travelers are advised to check the airport’s official website or contact their airline before heading to the airport.

Meanwhile, train traffic between Paris and Marseille remains halted. The SNCF warned that operations at Marseille’s main train station would continue to face significant disruptions throughout Wednesday.
