Pakistan contradicts Trump claim on imminent Iran deal talks
United States President Donald Trump said the United States and Iran were in the final stages of a potential agreement and suggested a deal could be reached within days. His remarks portrayed negotiations as close to completion, with no major obstacles remaining and rapid implementation possible once signed.
Trump also claimed that key regional dynamics, including maritime security through the Strait of Hormuz, would stabilize immediately after any agreement. He argued that diplomacy remained the preferred path over military action, warning that escalation could disrupt global shipping for months and increase regional instability.
His optimism was challenged by a historical pattern of similar statements. Since late March, he has repeatedly signaled that an agreement with Iran was imminent on dozens of occasions without a final deal materializing. Washington-based political observers noted that these predictions have consistently failed to translate into formal outcomes.
Pakistani officials involved in regional mediation efforts offered a contrasting assessment. They described the possibility of a near-term agreement as unlikely due to rising regional tensions and ongoing violations of fragile ceasefire arrangements in parts of the Middle East. Their position reflects growing skepticism about rapid diplomatic breakthroughs under current conditions.
Diplomatic friction has also intensified following Iran’s decision to suspend indirect communication channels with Washington earlier in June. Iranian officials linked the suspension to unresolved military developments involving Israel and demanded broader conditions related to conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza before resuming dialogue.
The breakdown in communication coincides with continued instability in southern Lebanon, where ceasefire arrangements remain contested. Israeli military activity and Hezbollah’s position on withdrawal terms have contributed to a stalled process, widening the gap between political timelines and conditions on the ground.
