OpenAI aims to become the next operating system with enterprise-focused strategy

OpenAI used its DevDay event on Monday to present a strategic vision for transforming ChatGPT from a popular consumer tool into a platform designed for businesses and everyday digital life.

The plan includes new developer tools that enable apps to run directly within ChatGPT, pilot partnerships with major media and retail companies, and a significant chip supply agreement to expand the computing power required for enterprise-grade performance.

Chief executive Sam Altman emphasized the shift toward business clients: “You should expect a huge focus from us on really leaning into enterprise,” he told journalists after the event, highlighting OpenAI’s intention to pursue larger, longer-term corporate contracts rather than relying solely on consumer subscriptions and API fees.

Altman also suggested that ChatGPT could evolve into a full-fledged operating system, a constantly available platform where users can perform tasks, access apps, and make purchases seamlessly. Demonstrations at DevDay showcased integrations with third-party services such as Spotify for music, Zillow for real-estate searches, and design tools, all functioning without leaving the chat interface.

Early partners announced include Spotify, Zillow, Mattel, and Etsy, reflecting OpenAI’s ambition to become a central interface for both personal and professional activities.

Enterprise push and infrastructure expansion

OpenAI’s strategy goes beyond software. The company confirmed a strategic supply and investment deal with AMD to secure advanced AI chips and scale its computing infrastructure. Executives emphasized that reliable performance, security, and predictable billing are essential for serving enterprises, including banks, retailers, media firms, and manufacturers.

The new developer tools, named AgentKit along with expanded SDKs, aim to let businesses embed task-handling AIs and instant checkout functions directly within ChatGPT. Analysts noted that enterprise contracts are typically larger and more stable than consumer subscriptions, though the required investment in infrastructure is substantial. Competitors such as Google, Microsoft, and Meta are pursuing similar enterprise offerings.

Altman framed the enterprise push with concrete numbers, noting that millions of users already rely on ChatGPT daily. OpenAI intends to deepen this engagement by enabling businesses to integrate services and access advanced, private setups.

The strategy raises familiar questions regarding privacy, control, and market competition. By focusing on enterprise adoption and global infrastructure, OpenAI aims to evolve from a mass-market app into a trusted platform for companies worldwide.
