Opel Astra expands lineup across electric hybrid diesel options

Opel has repositioned the Astra as a multi-powertrain compact car designed to cover the full transition spectrum in Europe and markets such as Morocco. The model now spans 100 percent electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid, and diesel versions, reflecting a strategy built on flexibility rather than rapid full electrification. The approach targets regions where charging infrastructure remains uneven and combustion engines still dominate sales.

The electric version, Astra Electric, delivers up to 454 kilometers of WLTP range. It uses a 58 kWh battery with 55 kWh usable capacity and a 115 kW motor, equivalent to 156 horsepower. Opel has introduced aerodynamic improvements to extend driving range by around 35 kilometers compared to the previous configuration. Fast charging up to 100 kW allows the battery to move from 20 to 80 percent in about 32 minutes, while an 11 kW onboard charger supports home and workplace charging.

The model also introduces vehicle-to-load capability, allowing the car to supply electricity to external devices. This feature extends the role of the vehicle beyond transport and positions it as a mobile energy source for outdoor activities or professional use. While still limited in everyday adoption in Morocco, it reflects a broader shift in how electric vehicles are being engineered for multi-purpose energy use.

The plug-in hybrid variant plays a central commercial role. It produces 195 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque, supported by a 17 kWh battery with 14 kWh usable capacity. It can travel up to 87 kilometers in combined WLTP electric mode and up to 95 kilometers in urban conditions. This configuration matches daily commuting needs while preserving long-distance capability through a combustion engine, a combination suited to mixed driving patterns in Moroccan cities and intercity routes.

The hybrid and diesel versions complete the lineup. The standard hybrid pairs a 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 145 horsepower, offering partial electric driving in urban use without charging requirements. The diesel variant retains a 1.5-liter engine with 130 horsepower, an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and 300 Nm of torque. Despite declining demand in Europe, diesel remains relevant in Morocco for high-mileage drivers, fleets, and cost-sensitive users.
