ONSSA denies Moroccan olive oil shipment rejection from Belgium
Morocco’s National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA) has refuted social media claims about a purported rejection of Moroccan olive oil shipments in Belgium due to non-compliance with health standards.
In an official statement, ONSSA clarified that the incident actually dates back to a limited recall in 2024, carried out by Belgian authorities, which was related not to product quality but to the absence of mandatory label information, such as lot numbers or expiration dates. There was no confirmation that the olive oil involved originated from Morocco.
Inspections conducted at the cited production facility confirmed full compliance with health and safety standards. ONSSA emphasized that Morocco maintains a strict quality control system, including 779 authorized production units, 439 inspections during the 2024–2025 campaign, and the destruction of 41 tons of non-compliant oil.
The office also highlighted the strengthening of pesticide residue testing, which increased from 1,536 samples in 2020 to 6,635 in 2025, demonstrating that Moroccan olive oil meets international export requirements and ensuring transparency and vigilance in the handling of all food safety complaints.
