North Korea–Russia road bridge opening appears delayed, analysis suggests

The planned opening of the first road bridge linking North Korea and Russia appears to have been postponed, according to a new assessment by the U.S.-based research organization 38 North, which cited satellite imagery showing construction work remains incomplete on the Russian side.

The 850-meter (2,789-foot) bridge, designed to connect North Korea directly to Russia's highway network, had previously been expected to open in mid-June. However, analysts say supporting infrastructure required for the crossing does not yet appear ready for operation.

Satellite images reviewed by 38 North indicate that several facilities on the Russian side of the border remain unfinished, suggesting the project is unlikely to become operational in the immediate future.

The bridge project was agreed during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Pyongyang in June 2024, reflecting the deepening strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea. Once completed, it will provide the first permanent road connection between the two countries, complementing their existing rail link.

Earlier this year, the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang stated that the bridge was expected to open on June 19, raising expectations that cross-border transport would soon expand.

The infrastructure project is viewed as an important component of growing economic and logistical cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang. Analysts say the bridge could facilitate increased trade, transport and broader bilateral exchanges, although both countries remain subject to extensive international sanctions.

The latest assessment does not identify an updated completion date, and neither Russian nor North Korean authorities have publicly announced a revised timetable.

The apparent delay highlights the practical challenges involved in completing major cross-border infrastructure projects, even as political ties between the two governments continue to strengthen.
