Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi sentenced to six years in prison
Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to six years in prison, her lawyer confirmed on Sunday. The sentence was handed down by an Iranian court for “assembly and collusion to commit crimes,” and she has also been banned from leaving the country for two years, according to her attorney, Mostafa Nili.
Mohammadi, who has been in detention since December, had previously received additional penalties in another case: one and a half years in prison for “propaganda activities” and two years of exile in the city of Khosf, in South Khorasan province. Under Iranian law, prison sentences are not cumulative, meaning the terms will not be added together.
The activist has long been recognized internationally for her advocacy of human rights and her opposition to government repression. Her sentencing has drawn widespread concern from global human rights organizations, which have called for her immediate release and condemned the restrictions placed on her movement.
