Nizar Baraka to WalaW: Seven Years of Drought Accelerated the Construction of New Dams
During the International Agriculture Forum in Meknes, Nizar Baraka, Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, shared with "WalaW" that seven consecutive years of drought have significantly pushed the government to intensify the pace of dam construction. Currently, 16 new dams are underway, underscoring their crucial role in securing water resources.
Baraka noted that recent rainfall has helped increase the national dam filling rate to 40.2 percent. However, he cautioned that this improvement does not signify the end of Morocco’s ongoing drought crisis.
In a brief interview with "WalaW", the minister affirmed that the government is striving to cover 100 percent of the country's drinking water needs and 80 percent of its agricultural demand. He described these efforts as encouraging and highlighted that the summer ahead is expected to be more stable compared to recent years, when some regions faced potable water shortages.
