Nintendo shares surge as Pokémon Pokopia becomes global gaming hit
Nintendo shares jumped as much as 10.5 percent on Tuesday, marking the company’s largest daily gain since April 2025, after the unexpected success of the new game Pokémon Pokopia boosted investor confidence and eased concerns about rising memory chip costs.
Pokémon Pokopia, a life simulation title inspired by the gameplay style of Animal Crossing and developed by Koei Tecmo, launched exclusively on the Switch 2 on March 5. Within days of release, the game sold out at major retailers across the United States, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.
Retail chains including Walmart, GameStop and Target quickly ran out of physical copies in the United States, while Nintendo’s official online store also reported depleted stock. Walmart Canada said it had sold its entire initial allocation and opened pre orders for a second shipment. On Amazon, the physical edition has already climbed to around 80 dollars, above its standard retail price, reflecting limited supply.
The game has also achieved the highest review score ever for a Pokémon title on Metacritic. Its popularity has extended beyond long time franchise fans, attracting a broader audience similar to the one that drove Animal Crossing New Horizons to more than 50 million copies sold worldwide.
Analyst Atul Goyal of Jefferies said in a research note that the viral momentum around the title is strengthening the launch cycle of the Switch 2. According to Goyal, the strong reception helps counterbalance investor concerns linked to rising memory chip costs, which had weighed on Nintendo’s stock performance since late 2025.
The surge offered relief to shareholders after a difficult period for the company’s stock. Nintendo shares had fallen nearly 30 percent from their peak in November as investors worried that higher memory prices, driven largely by demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure, could compress margins on the new console.
Earlier in March, the stock touched a 52 week low before rebounding sharply following the success of Pokémon Pokopia.
Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Toyo Securities, described the game as an unexpected breakout hit. He pointed to its rapid sell through from Japan to Canada as evidence of strong global appeal. Market watchers are now awaiting upcoming weekly sales data from Japanese publisher tracker Famitsu to assess whether the title can maintain its momentum and become a long term driver of Switch 2 console sales.
