Nigeria launches probe into tech Giants over alleged misuse of news content
Nigeria has ordered a formal investigation into several of the world's largest technology companies over allegations of anti-competitive conduct and the unauthorized use of news content, marking the country's latest effort to strengthen oversight of the digital economy.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) announced that President Bola Tinubu had instructed the regulator to examine complaints submitted by Nigerian media organizations concerning the practices of major technology platforms.
The inquiry will focus on companies including Meta, Alphabet, X, as well as developers of generative artificial intelligence platforms operating in Nigeria.
According to the FCCPC, the investigation will assess allegations that digital platforms have used news content without proper authorization while also examining whether their business practices may have distorted competition within Nigeria's media and technology sectors.
The move reflects growing concern among Nigerian publishers over the relationship between news organizations and global technology companies, particularly as digital platforms and AI-powered services increasingly distribute, summarize or utilize journalistic content.
Nigeria joins a growing number of countries seeking to redefine the balance between technology companies and media publishers. Governments around the world have introduced or considered regulatory measures aimed at ensuring that news organizations receive appropriate recognition or compensation when their content is used by digital platforms.
The investigation also highlights the expanding scrutiny of generative AI technologies, whose use of publicly available content for training and information delivery has become a central issue in regulatory debates across multiple jurisdictions.
The FCCPC has not indicated when the investigation is expected to conclude or whether it could result in enforcement actions or new regulatory requirements.
The outcome of the inquiry could have significant implications for how global technology companies operate in one of Africa's largest digital markets and may influence future policy discussions on competition, copyright and the use of news content by AI systems.
