Nicolas Sarkozy released from prison under judicial supervision
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been released from La Santé Prison in Paris after spending around twenty days behind bars, following a decision by the Paris Court of Appeal on Monday.
The court ruled in favor of his conditional release under judicial supervision, imposing several restrictions, including a ban on contacting certain political figures such as Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, and a prohibition on leaving French territory.
Sarkozy, who was serving a sentence related to the alleged Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign, will now await his appeal trial, scheduled for late March 2026. The precise dates are expected to be confirmed later this week.
Earlier in the day, the 70-year-old former head of state appeared by video link during the hearing, describing his experience in prison as “exhausting.” His appearance marked a historic moment — the first time in modern French history that a former president has been seen attending court proceedings from prison.
