Nico Williams commits to Athletic Bilbao until 2035, ending Barcelona's pursuit

Barcelona’s aspirations of securing Nico Williams as a future attacking partner for Lamine Yamal have been dashed, as the Spanish winger has extended his contract with Athletic Bilbao until June 2035.

The announcement, made through a creative video of Williams spray-painting "2035" on a mural in Barakaldo, underscores his dedication to his boyhood club. "I’m where I want to be. This is my home," the 22-year-old declared.

The new agreement significantly raises Williams' buyout clause, now reportedly close to €100 million—a figure well above Barcelona’s financial capacity under La Liga’s stringent salary cap. Previously, his buyout clause was set at approximately $73 million.

Athletic Bilbao’s rising star

Since debuting for Athletic Bilbao, Williams has made 206 appearances, scoring 42 goals and providing 34 assists across all competitions. His dynamic playstyle and versatility have also made him a vital part of the Spanish national team.

For Spain, Williams has partnered with Lamine Yamal in 12 matches, contributing eight goals and seven assists. Notably, he scored in the Euro final, helping Spain clinch the title against England.

Barcelona’s search for alternatives

Williams was envisioned as a long-term addition to Barcelona’s front three, complementing Yamal. Now, the Catalan giants must explore other options.

Coach Hansi Flick has reportedly set his sights on Liverpool’s Luis Díaz, but the English club rejected Barcelona’s initial bid and set the Colombian winger’s price at €80 million. Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford is also on the radar, though his availability remains uncertain.

Another scenario involves sticking with last season’s lineup, relying on Raphinha and Lewandowski. However, this approach carries risks, as Lewandowski will turn 37 next season, potentially leading to a dip in form. Promoting talent from La Masia is an alternative, but none currently replicate Williams’ speed and defensive contributions.

With limited financial flexibility, Barcelona faces mounting pressure to identify affordable, high-caliber talent to strengthen their attacking options for the upcoming season.
