New Gaza-bound aid mission to challenge Israeli blockade
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition is preparing to launch a new humanitarian mission to Gaza, weeks after Israeli forces intercepted one of its vessels in international waters. The new ship, named Handala, is set to depart from the Italian port of Siracusa on July 13. The effort aims to deliver aid to Palestinians facing severe food shortages while highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the besieged Gaza Strip.
The coalition announced that the mission is dedicated to Gaza’s children, who make up half the population and have spent their entire lives under blockade. The vessel’s name, Handala, pays tribute to the iconic Palestinian cartoon character symbolizing resistance and struggle.
“The children of Gaza face famine, disease, and unimaginable trauma,” the group said in a statement. A recent report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) revealed that one in five Palestinians in Gaza is on the brink of starvation. Nearly 93 percent of the enclave's population of 1.95 million suffers from acute food shortages due to Israel’s three-month-long total blockade, which was only partially eased in May to allow limited aid deliveries.
The Handala mission will include volunteer medics, lawyers, social justice activists, journalists, and community organizers. Similar flotilla missions have faced resistance in the past. In a recent incident, Israeli forces intercepted the aid vessel Madleen about 185 kilometers from Gaza, detaining 12 activists, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was later deported. Another ship, Conscience, was attacked by armed drones off the coast of Malta in May, leaving four people injured and the vessel significantly damaged.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition remains undeterred, emphasizing that their mission is a response to the dire humanitarian needs in Gaza and a call to end the blockade that has exacerbated suffering in the region.
