Nearly 1.9 tons of cannabis resin seized in major anti-drug operations in northern Morocco
Moroccan security services have intercepted nearly 1.9 tons of cannabis resin, locally known as “chira,” in two separate anti-drug operations carried out in the northern cities of Nador and Souk El Arbaa du Gharb, authorities announced.
According to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), the coordinated operations were conducted on Wednesday as part of ongoing efforts to combat international drug trafficking networks operating in the region.
The total seizure amounted to 1,870 kilograms of cannabis resin, which investigators believe was intended for illegal export through well-organized trafficking routes connecting Morocco to foreign markets.
Preliminary findings suggest that the shipments were part of transnational criminal networks specializing in the smuggling of narcotics. Authorities have not yet disclosed arrests, but investigations are actively ongoing under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.
Security services are currently working to identify all individuals involved in the two cases, dismantle potential accomplices, and trace both national and international links within the trafficking networks.
Officials say such operations are part of a broader national strategy to combat drug trafficking and strengthen border security, particularly in northern regions that have long been used as transit points for illicit cannabis resin destined for Europe.
The investigation remains open as authorities continue to analyze the structure and reach of the criminal organizations behind the shipments.
