Near Lyon: 18-year-old loses license two months after getting it for extreme speeding

The Rhône gendarmes stopped an 18-year-old driver for driving at 169 km/h on a stretch limited to 80 km/h in the eastern part of the department, near Saint-Exupéry Airport.

The young driver, who had obtained his license only two months ago, was immediately stripped of his driving license. Tests confirmed he was under the influence of cannabis.

During a two-hour speed control operation, 16 other drivers were fined for exceeding the speed limit by 30 to 60 km/h. The Rhône gendarmerie has increased controls in recent months following a sharp rise in road fatalities: 29 deaths were recorded in the first half of the year, compared to 13 in the same period in 2024.
