Nationwide marches planned across France to demand stronger action against sexual violence
Women's rights organisations and child protection groups are set to hold demonstrations across France on Saturday, calling for comprehensive reforms to combat sexual violence following the death of 11-year-old Lyhanna, a case that has sparked widespread public emotion and renewed debate over the country's approach to protecting women and children.
The nationwide mobilisation aims to transform public outrage into sustained political action by urging lawmakers to adopt a broad legislative framework addressing every stage of prevention, justice and victim support.
Demonstrations scheduled across the country
The main march is expected to begin in Paris, departing from Place de la Bastille and concluding at Place de la Nation.
Organisers have also announced gatherings in around 80 cities, including Agen, Dijon, Bordeaux and Rennes, reflecting the nationwide scope of the campaign.
The protests have been organised by a coalition of feminist and child advocacy organisations seeking stronger institutional responses to sexual violence.
Coalition renews call for comprehensive legislation
The organisers are urging the French government to adopt what they describe as a comprehensive framework law to tackle sexual violence through a coordinated approach.
The proposal goes beyond criminal prosecution, advocating measures focused on prevention, education, victim protection, judicial procedures and long-term support services, particularly for children and other vulnerable individuals.
The coalition first presented a package of 140 recommendations in late 2024 aimed at strengthening France's response to violence against women and children.
Debate over long-term policy
In its public appeal, the coalition argues that sexual violence should be addressed as a systemic issue requiring structural reforms rather than isolated legislative responses prompted by individual cases.
The organisations also caution against relying solely on tougher criminal penalties, arguing that broader preventive policies and improved support mechanisms are essential to reducing violence and protecting victims.
Public pressure grows after Lyhanna case
The demonstrations follow the death of Lyhanna, whose case has generated nationwide attention and intensified calls for reforms to improve child protection and responses to sexual violence.
Organisers hope the marches will encourage policymakers to pursue long-term legislative changes designed to strengthen prevention, enhance victim assistance and improve coordination across public institutions.
