National workshop in Rabat to defend best interests of children
A national workshop will take place in Rabat on 11 June 2026 to strengthen the protection of children’s rights and reinforce the principle of the best interests of the child. The event will be hosted at the Marriott hotel and will bring together more than 50 participants from public institutions, national bodies, civil society organizations, and international partners. The discussions aim to align child protection practices with both international standards and Morocco’s evolving legal framework.
The meeting is organized within the framework of a European Union funded initiative focused on improving protective justice for children and women detainees accompanied by their children. Ministry of Justice Morocco leads the initiative in partnership with Foundation AIDA and Association Bayti. The program seeks to translate legal principles into practical tools for courts, social services, and child protection mechanisms.
At the center of the agenda is the principle of the best interests of the child as defined in international child rights conventions. Participants will examine how this principle is applied in judicial decisions, public policy, and protection systems. The discussions also take place in a context where Morocco continues to adjust its legal and institutional framework in line with international child protection standards, with support from partners such as UNICEF Morocco and the European Union.
The workshop will also address juvenile justice reform, including alternatives to detention for minors in conflict with the law. Participants will review ongoing programs aimed at strengthening psychosocial support, reintegration measures, and coordination between justice actors. The objective is to improve efficiency across the child justice system and develop performance indicators that better reflect the realities of children in contact with the law.
