Morocco unveils ambitious airport expansion strategy to triple passenger capacity by 2030
Morocco's National Airports Office (ONDA) has launched "Airports 2030," a comprehensive strategy aimed at modernizing the nation's airport infrastructure and elevating customer experience to international standards. The initiative, announced following Royal Instructions issued during the December 4, 2024 Council of Ministers, addresses the aviation sector's challenges for the next five years.
The strategy focuses on three main pillars: infrastructure development, customer experience enhancement, and institutional transformation. At its core, the plan features a dramatic expansion of Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, which will increase its capacity from 14 to 35 million passengers by 2029, positioning it as an intercontinental hub connecting Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Major airports in Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez will also undergo significant expansions, with plans to double their capacities to accommodate growing air traffic. The modernization effort brings together key stakeholders, including the National Security Directorate, Royal Gendarmerie, Customs Administration, Ministry of Interior, and Ministry of Transport and Logistics.
ONDA Director General Adel El Fakir emphasized the transformation of passenger journeys through digital innovation and enhanced hospitality. "Our airports of tomorrow will embody an open, ambitious, and welcoming Morocco, offering international standards enriched by our legendary hospitality," he stated.
The initiative includes a comprehensive digitalization program to streamline all aspects of the passenger experience, from check-in to boarding, implementing cutting-edge technological solutions. ONDA is also undergoing an institutional transformation, potentially transitioning to a public limited company status to improve operational efficiency and infrastructure management.
The strategy emphasizes human capital development through continuous training programs, integration of new expertise, and adoption of international best practices. ONDA plans to foster internal innovation and promote a culture of excellence by encouraging initiative, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
A new visual identity will be introduced to reflect Morocco's renewed aviation ambitions. The "Airports 2030" strategy aligns with broader national developments, including preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, positioning Morocco as a key player in international aviation.
