Morocco tomato exports extend lead over Spain globally
Morocco has strengthened its position in the global fresh tomato trade, maintaining its lead over Spain for a fourth consecutive year in export volumes and widening its advantage in value for a second year. The shift reflects a broader realignment in agricultural competitiveness between the two countries, driven by sustained growth in Moroccan production and continued contraction in Spanish shipments.
In 2025, Morocco ranked as the world’s third-largest exporter of fresh and chilled tomatoes. The country shipped 707.6 million kilograms, accounting for 9.6% of global exports. Over the past decade, export volumes have increased by around 35%, underlining steady expansion in output, logistics capacity, and international market access.
Spain, once a dominant European supplier, continued its downward trend. It exported 537.4 million kilograms in 2025, representing 7.3% of global trade. The country has seen its export volumes fall by approximately 41% over the past ten years, reflecting structural pressure on its horticultural sector and rising competition from North African producers.
Morocco also retained its lead in export revenue for the second consecutive year. It generated 1,157 million MAD, equivalent to about 1.13 billion dollars, compared with Spain’s 1,025 million MAD, or roughly 1.0 billion dollars. The Moroccan average export price stood at 18 MAD per kilogram, below Spain’s 20.9 MAD per kilogram, showing higher competitiveness despite lower unit pricing.
On the global stage, Mexico remained the largest exporter with nearly 1.987 billion kilograms shipped, equal to 26.9% of total exports. The Netherlands ranked second with just over 1.044 billion kilograms, while Turkey placed fifth with slightly more than 402 million kilograms. Morocco’s continued rise positions it firmly among the leading global suppliers, ahead of Spain in both volume and value.
