Morocco to receive Avante 1800 warship from Spain in 2026
Morocco is set to acquire the Avante 1800 multi-mission patrol vessel from Spain, marking a major step in defense collaboration between the two nations. Spanish shipbuilder Navantia is finalizing construction of the ship at its facilities in Cádiz, with delivery to the Royal Moroccan Navy expected in 2026, in line with the original schedule.
This acquisition stems from a €95 million financing deal signed in September 2022 between the Moroccan government and Spanish bank Santander. The agreement also includes extensive technical and logistical support: spare parts, specialized equipment, technical documentation, and crew training to be conducted in Spain.
Measuring 87 meters in length and 13 meters in width, the patrol vessel is designed to house a crew of 60. It features advanced systems for maritime surveillance and coastal patrol missions, significantly enhancing Morocco’s naval capabilities.
The project's overall cost is estimated at around €130 million, making it the largest military procurement Morocco has undertaken with the Spanish defense industry to date.
This transaction reflects growing military ties between Rabat and Madrid. From 1991 to 2020, the total value of military contracts between the two nations reached about €385 million, with €165 million allocated specifically for military transport equipment.
The Avante 1800 deal is expected to strengthen mutual trust and cooperation in the security and defense sectors, especially as both countries face evolving regional challenges and Morocco continues to modernize its naval forces.
