Morocco targets unified and sustainable mobility system for 2030 World Cup

Morocco is advancing its development strategy to meet global benchmarks as it prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, said Abdessamad Kayouh, Minister of Transport and Logistics. Speaking at the international seminar “Accessibility and Mobility in Urban and Peri-Urban Areas: Challenges and Opportunities for the Cities of Tomorrow,” Kayouh emphasized Morocco’s commitment to creating a modern, sustainable, and integrated transport system that supports economic and social progress.

Kayouh highlighted the nation’s transformative projects, including the Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed rail line, a 430-kilometer axis connecting northern, central, and southern Morocco. He also pointed to the Casablanca Regional Express Network (RER), which promises to revolutionize urban and suburban mobility.

Air transport is another critical pillar of Morocco’s vision. The country aims to expand its airport capacity to accommodate 80 million passengers annually by 2030, positioning Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca as a major hub linking Africa to the world. Additionally, Royal Air Maroc’s fleet will grow to strengthen both domestic and regional connectivity.

In logistics, Morocco is focusing on urban freight solutions, such as the development of logistics zones on city peripheries. Kayouh mentioned the 32-hectare Ras El Ma zone in Fes, designed to streamline goods distribution, reduce congestion in city centers, and improve access to markets and retail areas.

The minister also announced the upcoming National Charter for Sustainable and Inclusive Mobility, set for completion by 2035. This framework will guide stakeholders in aligning efforts to achieve a unified, environmentally sustainable, and inclusive transport system.

Kayouh reaffirmed Morocco’s readiness to meet the logistical demands of the 2030 World Cup by leveraging transport advancements to promote territorial integration, sustainability, and regional competitiveness.

The three-day seminar, organized by the Moroccan Permanent Association of Road Congresses (AMPCR) in collaboration with the World Road Association (PIARC) and the Private University of Fes (UPF), has brought together national and international experts to explore innovative solutions in transport planning, safety, and resilience, with a focus on social equity and sustainability.
