Morocco spotlighted at the 36th São Paulo biennale
São Paulo, September 7, 2025 – Morocco takes center stage at the 36th São Paulo Biennale, showcasing its artists in dialogue with the global art scene under the theme “Not All Travelers Follow the Roads – Humanity as Practice.”
Curated by Cameroonian Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung and Moroccan co-curator Alya Sebti, the edition brings together 125 individual and collective participants reflecting on the human condition.
Morocco is represented by eight major artists: Chaïbia Talal, Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Melehi, Leila Alaoui, Amina Agueznay, Malika Agueznay, Laila Hida, and Meriem Bennani. Alya Sebti emphasizes that “each artist embodies humanity at the core of their practice, built daily, over time, and always in relation to others.”
The Moroccan presence promotes intergenerational dialogue: founding figures Belkahia and Melehi resonate with Brazilian artists like Ediva Ramosa, while Chaïbia Talal engages with Maria Auxiliadora. Leila Alaoui’s series No Pasaran is praised for its empathic strength.
Beyond the art itself, Morocco plays a logistical role, with national airline Royal Air Maroc serving as the Biennale’s official carrier. The public program, which began in 2024 in Marrakech, Tokyo, Zanzibar, and Guadeloupe, continues until January 11, 2026. The main exhibition at the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion features 120 artists across six thematic chapters, complemented by performances, projections, publications, and augmented reality installations in the Apparitions project.
