Morocco’s Nadia Amal Bernoussi elected president of UN Human Rights Council advisory committee
Morocco has bolstered its global presence in the field of human rights with the election of Nadia Amal Bernoussi as president of the UN Human Rights Council’s Advisory Committee. The decision was made during the committee’s 33rd session held in Geneva.
Comprising 18 independent experts from diverse professional backgrounds, the Advisory Committee plays a pivotal role in providing studies and recommendations on human rights issues.
Nadia Amal Bernoussi brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished academic background to her new role. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Political Science, as well as a PhD in Public Law from Mohammed V University in Rabat. Her career spans academia and public service, with significant contributions as a professor of constitutional law and political institutions at the National School of Administration in Rabat, the Moroccan Academy of Diplomatic Studies, and the Faculty of Legal, Economic, and Social Sciences in Rabat.
Bernoussi’s impressive portfolio also includes serving as president of the Commission for the Development of the Law on the Creation of the Consultative Council on Youth and Associative Action. She is a founding member of the Gender and Governance Network and the Moroccan Network on Gender and Governance. Additionally, she presided over UNESCO’s Jury on Tolerance and Non-Violence from 2016 to 2018.
Her extensive contributions to human rights include authoring numerous publications, studies, and consultancy reports on topics such as elections, constitutional justice, and gender equality.
Morocco’s commitment to human rights
This milestone reflects Morocco’s ongoing dedication to advancing human rights and civil liberties, as enshrined in its constitution. Over the years, the country has earned international recognition for its efforts to strengthen human rights frameworks and uphold universal values.
A source from the Moroccan government previously emphasized that the nation’s active engagement with the UN Human Rights Council stems from a collaborative approach to promoting universal principles. Morocco’s leadership in the council underscores its commitment to reforms and its growing influence in the global human rights arena.
Morocco’s presidency of the council was secured with an overwhelming 30 out of 47 votes, surpassing South Africa’s 17 votes. This marked the first time Morocco assumed such a prominent position within the UN body.
As a founding member of the Human Rights Council, Morocco has been an active participant in international human rights discussions, consistently displaying “constant activism, dynamism,” and a sense of responsibility. The country has also ratified nine out of ten major international human rights treaties, further demonstrating its commitment to global standards.
With Nadia Amal Bernoussi’s election, Morocco continues to solidify its role as a key player on the international stage, contributing to the advancement of human rights and the promotion of equality and justice worldwide.
