Morocco’s Key Delegation Attends UN C24 Regional Seminar on Moroccan Sahara
A significant Moroccan delegation will participate in the regional seminar of the United Nations Committee of 24 (C24), scheduled from May 21 to 23 in Dili, Timor-Leste.
The delegation will be led by Omar Hilale, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, and Redouane Houssaini, the Ambassador of His Majesty the King to Jakarta. It includes senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, as well as the Vice-President of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS).
This seminar offers the Moroccan delegation the opportunity to update committee members and participants on recent developments regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, highlighting the growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, now backed by over 117 countries more than 60% of UN member states.
The delegation will also emphasize the increasing international recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Moroccan Sahara, citing strong positions from numerous countries, including two permanent UN Security Council members: France and the United States, the latter being the penholder of Security Council resolutions on the Sahara issue.
Additionally, progress achieved in the southern provinces will be highlighted, driven by the new development model launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in 2015, backed by a budget exceeding $10 billion and demonstrating a high implementation rate.
The seminar will also be used to underscore Algeria’s clear responsibility in perpetuating the dispute, stressing its historic and political role as a key party, as reflected in successive Security Council resolutions, including resolution 2756 adopted in October 2024.
Furthermore, two elected representatives from the Moroccan Sahara Ms. Ghalla Bahiya from the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region and Mr. M’hamed Abba from Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra are attending the seminar by invitation of the committee chairperson, continuing a tradition of several years.
