Morocco’s Secretary of State for Handicrafts, Lahcen Saadi, recently highlighted the alarming decline of traditional Moroccan handicrafts. During a session of oral questioning at the House of Representatives, Saadi emphasized the collective responsibility to uphold these vital elements of Morocco’s cultural heritage.

He asserted that the preservation of this heritage hinges on effective vocational training, a practice that historically relied on the transfer of skills from parents to their children within workshops. However, Saadi pointed out that significant societal changes, coupled with legal reforms prohibiting child labor, have disrupted this age-old transmission of craftsmanship from older generations to the younger populace.

The minister further elaborated on Morocco’s commitment to vocational training in the handicraft sector, noting the existence of 69 institutions and training centers catering to over 60 different crafts.

The government aims to expand the number of beneficiaries in this sector from 25,000 to 100,000, thereby significantly enhancing the role of handicrafts in the national economy. Current statistics reveal that revenues from handicrafts account for approximately 7% of Morocco’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), generating an estimated MAD 140 billion (around $14 billion) annually.

Production-related handicrafts alone contribute MAD 96.3 billion ($9.6 billion), while service-oriented crafts add MAD 43.7 billion ($4.3 billion) to the economy. In 2024, Morocco’s artisanal exports reached MAD 1.11 billion ($111 million), and 251 artisans were awarded national quality labels, underscoring the sector's vitality.

Beyond their economic impact, Moroccan handicrafts embody the nation’s rich history and cultural narratives. These meticulously crafted items not only reflect the creativity and dedication of Moroccan artisans but also serve as a testament to the country’s artistic legacy. The government is poised to take further steps to ensure the protection and promotion of this invaluable heritage.
