Morocco’s Hass avocado season rebounds after early market challenges
After a difficult start marked by price pressure and market saturation, Morocco’s Hass avocado season is showing signs of recovery, driven by rising local demand and improving European market conditions.
Early tensions in the market
The season began with significant challenges as limited volumes and high price expectations prompted European buyers to push prices down aggressively. This pressure was exacerbated by an influx of avocados from Latin America, which temporarily oversupplied the European market.
According to Abdelkrim Allaoui, president of the Association of Avocado Producers in the Gharb region, “There was a clear attempt to lower prices, sometimes even below last season’s levels.” In response, many Moroccan farmers delayed their harvests, waiting for better conditions. This cautious approach resulted in a slow start that did not reflect the sector’s full production potential.
Recovery driven by local demand and improved prices
Market conditions began to stabilize in early December, with farm-gate prices rising by more than 15% in just two weeks. This increase has reinvigorated the harvest, encouraging producers to accelerate their pace as sales become more favorable.
Local demand has also played a critical role in supporting the market. With Ramadan approaching, Moroccan traders have been stockpiling avocados, adding momentum to the campaign. Allaoui highlighted this phenomenon, noting, “Domestic demand is very active. This suggests the season could end earlier than expected.”
High-quality production boosts confidence
The quality of this year’s avocado crop has further fueled optimism. Producers report that the harvested fruit is of good size and excellent quality, strengthening their confidence to maintain prices that reflect the product’s value.
“This level of quality should be properly rewarded, without the market yielding too easily to downward pressure,” Allaoui emphasized.
Positive outlook for the remainder of the season
Despite the rocky start, Morocco’s Hass avocado season is now on a stable trajectory. If domestic demand continues to thrive and European market conditions remain favorable, producers could see a strong finish to the campaign. This recovery highlights the resilience of Morocco’s avocado sector and its ability to navigate challenging global market dynamics.
