Morocco’s global brand: leveraging diplomacy, innovation, and culture for influence

The MEDays 2025 Summit in Tangier highlighted Morocco’s unique position to redefine its global identity through innovation, diplomacy, and cultural outreach. A panel discussion titled “Nation Branding: Harnessing the Kingdom’s Strengths to Redefine & Maximize the ‘Moroccan’ Brand” explored how the country can solidify its international presence by uniting its strategic assets under a cohesive strategy.

Morocco’s strategic location as a global gateway

Morocco’s geographic position, connecting Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic, offers a critical advantage as global trade routes and supply chains shift. With state-of-the-art infrastructure such as the Tanger Med port, the country serves as a stable bridge between continents. Panelists emphasized that Morocco’s foreign policy, which balances traditional alliances with expanding ties to Africa, the Gulf, and Asia, reinforces this strategic value. However, with global economic and political instability, Morocco must ensure consistency and credibility to maintain its appeal to international investors.

Building technological capacity for a stronger identity

Mohamed Benouda, President of ABA Technology, stressed the importance of technological development in shaping Morocco’s national brand. Highlighting ABA Technology’s growth from producing connected devices locally to offering solutions across Europe, Benouda explained how technological sovereignty could enhance Morocco’s reputation. He argued that integrating traditional industries with advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things is essential to securing the country’s competitive edge.

Mobilizing the diaspora for economic growth

Hatim Zineb, President of Morocco Entrepreneurs, highlighted the crucial role of the Moroccan diaspora in driving economic development. While the diaspora possesses capital, expertise, and networks, Zineb pointed out that bureaucratic inefficiencies and inconsistent procedures hinder their full engagement. She called for reforms to create a transparent and supportive business environment, enabling diaspora investors to contribute more effectively to Morocco’s economic growth.

Competing in a dynamic global economy

Economist Karim El Mokri of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council placed Morocco’s branding efforts within the broader global context, noting the challenges posed by economic protectionism, technological disruption, and fierce competition for investment. He emphasized that Morocco must deliver tangible results in areas like food security, renewable energy, and digital governance to stand out on the global stage. El Mokri warned that digitalization and artificial intelligence amplify the impact of both positive and negative experiences, making consistency and effectiveness in governance even more critical.

A unified strategy for Morocco’s future image

The panel concluded that Morocco’s global branding efforts must integrate diplomacy, technological innovation, economic modernization, and cultural heritage. By fostering collaboration among institutions, regions, entrepreneurs, artists, and the diaspora, the country can project an image of ambition, stability, and innovation. This cohesive approach is essential to positioning Morocco as a partner that offers solutions to global challenges while preserving its unique identity.
