Morocco launches central unit in Rabat to combat violence against women

A new central operational unit dedicated to supporting women victims of violence has been officially launched in Rabat, marking a significant step in strengthening protection mechanisms across Morocco.

The structure, established under the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Integration and Family, aims to improve coordination between institutions involved in assisting victims while ensuring comprehensive care. This includes legal guidance, psychological support, social assistance, and specialized referral services.

The initiative is part of the implementation of Law 103.13, which focuses on combating violence against women and reinforcing their legal protection. Authorities say the new unit will also oversee decentralized support centers and enhance cooperation at the regional and local levels.

The inauguration ceremony brought together several key figures, including Minister Naima Ibn Yahya, Public Prosecutor Hicham Balaoui, and Marielle Sander, representing the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Officials highlighted the importance of a coordinated and victim-centered approach to addressing gender-based violence.

During the event, speakers emphasized that the creation of this unit aligns with broader national efforts to promote women’s rights and improve access to justice. The system is also expected to strengthen case monitoring through digital platforms and enhance collaboration with partner institutions.

The move reflects ongoing efforts by Moroccan authorities to address violence against women as a public concern, with a focus on prevention, protection, and long-term support for victims.
