Morocco inaugurates ELMARSAD radiological monitoring sonde in Rabat
The ELMARSAD sonde was inaugurated on 10 June at the headquarters of the Agence marocaine de sûreté et de sécurité nucléaires et radiologiques (AMSSNuR) in Rabat. The installation forms part of a technical cooperation project involving the agency, the European Commission and Belgium’s Institute of Radioelements (IRE-Lab).
The system aims to strengthen Morocco’s national capacity for environmental radiological surveillance. It supports faster detection of abnormal radiation levels, early warning functions and emergency response coordination in case of nuclear or radiological incidents. The initiative also contributes to building a more integrated monitoring network aligned with international safety standards.
Officials present at the ceremony included Saïd Mouline, alongside the ambassadors of the European Union and Belgium in Morocco. They highlighted the role of international cooperation in developing technical systems that improve prevention, control and protection in the nuclear and radiological field.
The project includes the deployment of multiple sondes across different regions of the country. It is designed to support a national radiological monitoring programme linked to accredited laboratories. Authorities aim to create a structured system capable of covering the national territory and reinforcing preparedness for emergency situations.
