Morocco enters top five clients of Turkish chemical exports

Turkey’s chemical exports recorded a sharp shift in May 2026, with Morocco rising to fourth place among the sector’s main destinations. The North African country moved ahead in the ranking behind Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands, marking a significant change in trade flows. Export volumes to Morocco increased by more than 200 percent over the same period a year earlier, reflecting stronger commercial ties between the two markets.

Turkey’s overall exports reached 22.5 billion dollars in May 2026. The chemical industry accounted for more than 15 percent of this total, representing close to 3 billion dollars in value. Over the first five months of the year, chemical exports accumulated around 14 billion dollars, posting growth of more than 5 percent compared with the previous year. The sector maintained its role as one of the country’s core industrial pillars.

The performance of the chemical industry relied on several key product groups. Mineral fuels and oils led the segment, followed by plastics and inorganic chemical products. Other contributing industries included cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and paints, which helped sustain diversified export growth across multiple value chains. This structure reduced reliance on a single product category and supported broader export stability.

European markets continued to dominate Turkish chemical exports, but Morocco’s rapid rise highlighted growing demand across North Africa. Turkish exporters have increasingly targeted emerging markets as global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions reshape trade routes. The strategy focuses on higher value-added production, industrial innovation, and geographic diversification to strengthen long-term competitiveness.
