Morocco enhances energy efficiency initiatives in handicraft sector

Morocco is intensifying efforts to improve energy efficiency within its handicraft industry, aiming to reduce firewood and gas consumption. A new agreement, signed between the Secretary of State for Handicrafts and the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE), outlines a strategy to integrate energy-saving technologies, resource optimization, and decarbonization into this vital sector.

Agreement to promote sustainable practices

The framework agreement, signed by Lahcen Essady, Secretary of State for Handicrafts, and Mohamed Benyahia, Director General of AMEE, focuses on supporting artisans in adopting energy-efficient practices. This includes promoting the use of high-performance gas ovens, advanced wood-fired ovens, and energy-efficient boilers, particularly for traditional hammams.

The initiative also targets rural and mountainous areas, encouraging the deployment of sustainable heating and cooking systems reliant on firewood. It further emphasizes the importance of training artisans and raising awareness about energy conservation. In addition, plans are underway to develop a prototype for eco-energy-efficient rural construction and create energy labels for handicraft products.

Prototypes for gas ovens and national labeling

The agreement includes the design and development of two prototypes for gas ovens tailored to pottery, ceramics artisans, and bakers. To ensure widespread adoption, the parties will train artisans to build these ovens and introduce a national label certifying that products were made using energy-efficient methods.

Sustainability at the core of Morocco’s energy strategy

Morocco’s renewable energy strategy reflects its broader commitment to sustainability. The country has set an ambitious goal of generating 52% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. This initiative within the handicraft sector aligns with Morocco’s vision to integrate sustainability into all facets of its economy, including its rich cultural heritage.
