Morocco drops two places in FIFA women’s ranking, ends the year 66th

Morocco’s women’s national football team has slipped two positions in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking, finishing the year in 66th place. The updated standings, released on Thursday, reflect a challenging final stretch for the Atlas Lionesses, who recorded one win, one draw, and two friendly-match defeats.

Morocco now holds 1,399.54 points, a decrease of nearly eight points compared to the previous August ranking. This drop also affects the team’s continental standing: the Lionesses remain 5th in Africa, behind Nigeria (37th), South Africa (55th), Ghana (62nd), and Zambia (65th).

The latest ranking period brought significant movement worldwide following several continental competitions and Women’s World Cup qualifying matches, although the global Top 10 remains mostly stable.

Spain, reigning world champion, maintains the No. 1 spot after defending its UEFA Women’s Nations League title. Germany, beaten by Spain in the final, rises two positions to take 3rd place—one of the strongest improvements in the top tier. The United States remain 2nd following back-to-back friendly wins over Italy.

Sweden drops two spots to 5th after its Nations League semifinal defeat to Spain, while France (7th) and Canada (10th) also slide down one place each. Meanwhile, Brazil (6th) and North Korea (9th) move upward.

Further down the rankings, several teams showed remarkable progress. Nicaragua, Burkina Faso, and the American Samoa each jumped 16 places, with American Samoa earning more than 63 points — the highest gain of the period. Conversely, Paraguay endured the steepest drop in the Top 50, falling five spots to 46th.

In Africa and Asia, Mali (85th), Egypt (101st), India (67th), Cameroon (70th), and the Solomon Islands (77th) all suffered noticeable declines.

Notably, Chad and Libya appear in the FIFA Women’s Ranking for the first time, following their participation in the FIFA Unites: Women’s Series held in Morocco—bringing the total number of ranked teams to a record 198.
