Morocco Dominates Spanish Pepper Market With 200 Percent Export Surge
Over the last decade, Morocco has significantly expanded its bell pepper exports to Spain, recording an astonishing 200% growth and setting a new benchmark in 2024. The country has emerged as Spain's primary supplier, outpacing other European exporters by a wide margin.
In 2024 alone, Morocco exported 101.11 million kilograms of peppers to Spain, accounting for a remarkable 92.36% of Spain’s total pepper imports. This marks a substantial leap from the 33.71 million kilos exported in 2015 a growth rate of nearly 200%.
According to data from Estacom, compiled by the agricultural news outlet Hortoinfo, this rise reflects a consistent upward trend over the past ten years. In terms of value, Moroccan pepper exports generated €121.46 million in 2024, maintaining a steady average price of €1.20 per kilogram.
This rapid growth has placed Morocco far ahead of other competitors. Portugal, despite a 492.7% increase in its own exports, shipped just 2.84 million kilos in 2024. France followed with 2.08 million kilos, showing only modest growth since 2015.
Meanwhile, Spain's own pepper exports also rose, but at a slower pace of 20.87% over the same period. In 2024, Spain exported 844.62 million kilos of peppers, benefiting from increased demand across the EU and evolving supply chains.
Spain also saw a sharp increase in export revenues, reaching €1.66 billion in 2024 an €800 million jump since 2015. The average export price rose from €1.25 to €1.97 per kilo during the decade.
Germany remained the top importer of Spanish peppers, purchasing 295.02 million kilos in 2024, a 29.03% increase from 2015. This represented 34.93% of total Spanish pepper exports and brought in €596.7 million at an average price of €2.02 per kilo.
France was the second-largest buyer, increasing its imports by 10.06% to reach 111.78 million kilos in 2024. These purchases were valued at €206.33 million, with an average price of €1.85 per kilo.
The United Kingdom also showed impressive growth, nearly doubling its imports over the past decade. In 2024, the UK imported 110.21 million kilos of Spanish peppers worth €224.91 million, at an average price of €2.04 per kilo.
