Morocco has emerged as a key player in the clean energy sector, solidifying its role as a strategic partner for the European Union (EU). This partnership was highlighted by Ann Mettler, Vice President for Europe at "Breakthrough Energy," an international consortium of companies dedicated to developing innovative solutions in renewable energy.

Strengthened Cooperation Between Morocco and the EU

During the 61st Munich Security Conference (MSC-2025), Ann Mettler emphasized Morocco's significance as a strategic energy partner for the EU. She stressed the importance of reinforcing this collaboration as Europe seeks to diversify its energy sources and accelerate its energy transition.

Morocco boasts vast renewable energy potential, particularly in solar and wind energy. The country has already undertaken large-scale projects, including the Noor solar complex, one of the largest globally, along with extensive wind farms that power a growing portion of the national grid.

An Ambitious Vision for Innovation and Energy Transition

Beyond renewable energy production, Morocco is adopting a comprehensive approach by investing in innovation and decarbonizing its economy. Mettler stated, "The Kingdom aims to be a full-fledged player in the global energy transition. It’s not just about deploying renewable infrastructure, but also exploring innovative ideas."

This vision has attracted the interest of "Breakthrough Energy," which sees Morocco as an ideal environment for investments and the development of cutting-edge energy solutions. Established in 2015 by Bill Gates at the UN Climate Conference (COP21), "Breakthrough Energy" focuses on accelerating the energy transition through strategic investments in clean technologies.

Global Context and Energy Transition Challenges

The Munich Security Conference (MSC-2025), held from February 14-16, underscores global challenges in energy governance and climate change. With geopolitical tensions and the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, collaboration between the EU and its strategic partners, such as Morocco, has become a critical issue.

With its ambitious energy vision and large-scale projects, Morocco confirms its leadership in Africa and beyond, further solidifying its position in the global energy transition.
