Morocco and Niger deepen military cooperation as Sahel challenges persist

A high-ranking military delegation from Niger recently concluded a week-long visit to Morocco, underscoring the strengthening ties between the two nations amid growing regional instability in the Sahel.

Under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Army Corps General Mohammed Berrid hosted Niger’s Division General Moussa Salaou Barmou to discuss bilateral military collaboration. The Moroccan Royal Armed Forces (FAR) emphasized the “exceptional quality” of the relationship, rooted in mutual respect and shared objectives of security and stability.

The discussions covered several areas of cooperation, including joint training, operational readiness, and military health. Both sides highlighted the importance of continued exchanges of expertise and visits, reflecting the strategic partnership between Rabat and Niamey.

Morocco’s pivotal role in Sahel security

The Sahel region remains fraught with challenges, including terrorism, human trafficking, and organized crime. As a key regional player, Morocco has bolstered its military capabilities, gaining international recognition for its contributions to peacekeeping and regional stability.

Morocco’s military is regarded as one of the most capable in the region. The Global Firepower report recently ranked Morocco as the 59th most powerful military worldwide in 2025, out of 145 countries assessed. This standing is supported by sustained investment in modernizing military infrastructure and equipment, as well as increased defense spending, which rose by 2.6% in 2024, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

Broader cooperation with Niger

Beyond military ties, Morocco has strengthened its diplomatic and economic ties with Niger. Initiatives such as offering 200 university scholarships for the 2025-2026 academic year and expanding transport cooperation demonstrate Rabat’s commitment to fostering regional partnerships.

As Sahel countries grapple with their security and sovereignty, Morocco’s growing influence positions it as a vital ally in addressing both immediate and long-term challenges.
