Morocco and Mauritania bolster ties with renewable energy pact

Morocco and Mauritania have taken a significant step toward enhancing their partnership in the energy sector by signing a memorandum of understanding focused on renewable energy and electricity cooperation.

The agreement was signed in Rabat by Morocco’s Minister of Energy, Lelia Benali, and Mauritania’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mohamed Ould Khaled, during the latter’s working visit to Morocco. This collaboration reflects the shared vision of King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani to strengthen bilateral relations across various domains.

A key feature of the partnership is the exploration of an electrical interconnection project between the two nations. This initiative aims to stabilize energy networks, improve electricity supply, and promote clean energy solutions. The agreement also emphasizes the exchange of expertise in managing energy networks and ensuring energy security, fostering mutual growth and sustainability.

The working visit further highlights the growing momentum between Morocco and Mauritania in deepening their ties. In December, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani visited Rabat and met with King Mohammed VI to discuss opportunities for collaboration, signaling a renewed commitment to advancing bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, Mauritania is also poised to undertake other development initiatives. Reports from Mauritanian media suggest that UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan plans to visit Mauritania to announce new projects, which are expected to benefit both Mauritania and Morocco.

This latest agreement underscores the determination of Morocco and Mauritania to strengthen their cooperation in renewable energy, setting the stage for a more sustainable and interconnected future.
