Morocco and Mauritania Agree to Rehabilitate Major Nouakchott–Nouadhibou Road
Morocco and Mauritania have signed a new agreement aimed at rehabilitating and widening Mauritania’s National Road No. 4, a major route connecting Nouakchott with Nouadhibou through Kilometer 55.
The agreement was concluded Monday in Rabat as part of ongoing bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Its objective is to improve road infrastructure and strengthen transport links along a corridor that plays an important role in movement between Mauritania’s political and economic centers.
Infrastructure Cooperation Takes Center Stage
The signing ceremony brought together Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, and Mauritania’s Minister of Equipment and Transport, Aall Ould El Veirak.
The project places road infrastructure at the heart of bilateral cooperation, with the rehabilitation and expansion of National Road No. 4 expected to improve travel conditions and transport services along the route.
The Mauritanian Ministry of Equipment and Transport described the agreement as a further illustration of cooperation between the two countries. It also presented the initiative within the framework of the broader bilateral relationship and the orientations of King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
Strengthening the Nouakchott–Nouadhibou Link
National Road No. 4 connects Nouakchott, Mauritania’s political capital, with Nouadhibou, the country’s main economic center. Improving the route is therefore expected to support the movement of people and goods between two strategically important cities.
Beyond its domestic role, the road also contributes to overland connectivity between Morocco and Mauritania. Its rehabilitation and widening could facilitate more efficient road links and support economic exchanges across the two countries.
A Focus on Regional Connectivity
The agreement reflects a broader emphasis on transport infrastructure as a tool for strengthening economic links in the region. By improving a major north-south corridor in Mauritania, the project is intended to provide more reliable connections while reinforcing the road network linking the two neighboring countries.
