Morocco and eurasian union expand economic cooperation talks in Moscow
The Eurasian Economic Commission and Morocco have moved to reinforce their economic partnership during high-level talks held in Moscow. The meeting brought together Daniyar Imanaliev, minister responsible for integration and macroeconomics within the commission, and Morocco’s ambassador to Russia, Lotfi Bouchaara. Discussions focused on expanding trade relations and improving cooperation frameworks between Morocco and member states of the Eurasian Economic Union.
Both sides reviewed the current state of economic exchanges and identified areas for deeper collaboration. Officials underlined the strategic importance of building stronger institutional ties to support trade flows, investment opportunities, and regulatory coordination between Morocco and the bloc composed of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia.
Trade between Morocco and Eurasian Union countries has shown steady growth in recent years. Officials reported an increase of 17 percent in 2025, pushing total exchanges beyond 2 billion dollars. This expansion reflects growing demand for diversified trade routes and broader market access on both sides, particularly in agriculture, industrial goods, and energy-related sectors.
Morocco’s position as a gateway to African markets featured prominently in the discussions. The Moroccan side emphasized the country’s logistical and commercial infrastructure, which offers Eurasian businesses easier access to West and Sub-Saharan Africa. This role aligns with long-standing efforts to position Morocco as a regional hub for trade and investment flows.
A cooperation memorandum signed in Rabat in 2017 continues to serve as the legal foundation for bilateral engagement. The framework supports dialogue on trade facilitation, market access, and business cooperation. Both parties also highlighted the importance of increasing private sector participation and organizing technical consultations to identify concrete investment opportunities.
Officials further discussed sector-specific partnerships aimed at strengthening collaboration in areas of mutual interest. These include efforts to improve information exchange between business communities and reduce barriers to market entry. The Eurasian side also pointed to preferential tariff arrangements that allow selected Moroccan exports to benefit from reduced or eliminated customs duties, supporting export growth and economic diversification.
