Morocco advances to 60th in women's FIFA ranking ahead of WAFCON
The Moroccan national women’s football team has made a notable advancement in the latest FIFA World Ranking, now positioned at 60th globally. This ranking update, released today, highlights Morocco's gradual rise in women's football.
At the top of the global rankings, the United States retains its leading position, closely followed by Spain, Germany, and England, all of which have maintained their previous standings. Japan has surged to fifth place, reflecting a three-point improvement, while Sweden, Canada, and Brazil each experienced a slight decline.
Completing the top ten are North Korea and the Netherlands, ranked ninth and tenth, respectively. Within Africa, Morocco holds the third spot, trailing Nigeria, which is ranked 36th globally, and South Africa at 40th.
As the Atlas Lionesses prepare for the upcoming Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place from July 5 to 26 in Morocco, expectations are high. In the tournament’s draw, Morocco has been placed in Group A alongside Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Team captain Ghizlane Chebbak expressed optimism regarding their prospects in the tournament. In a recent media interaction, she emphasized the squad's determination to compete fiercely and aim for their first continental title. Following a friendly match against Ghana, which ended in a narrow 1-0 victory for Morocco, Chebbak remarked, “The Ghanaian team is strong, and we wanted to play against tough teams like this to test our real level. Today, thankfully, we managed to win, but it was difficult.”
Chebbak added that the team will continue to focus on their training regimen to address weaknesses before the WAFCON. The Moroccan squad seeks to build on their impressive performance from the 2022 WAFCON, where they reached the final for the first time in history.
