Morocco advances strategic step in civil nuclear energy transition

Morocco is taking a structured approach to integrating civil nuclear energy into its national energy mix, aiming to complement its ongoing renewable energy initiatives and enhance overall energy security.

Since launching its energy strategy in 2009, Morocco has transformed its energy landscape through diversification and significant investment in clean energy. Renewables now account for nearly half of the country’s installed capacity, with targets set to exceed 52% by 2030.

The growing interest in nuclear power reflects several key factors. Reliance on imported fossil fuels exposes the country to global price volatility, while rising energy demand calls for reliable, low-carbon sources. Civil nuclear energy could provide a stable, continuous supply, supporting Morocco’s decarbonization goals.

Morocco emphasizes a cautious, gradual approach rather than a sudden shift to nuclear power. The country already possesses scientific and institutional foundations, with experience in peaceful nuclear applications, particularly in research and medicine.

Small modular reactors (SMRs) represent a promising avenue, offering compact, flexible solutions suited to local needs. These units could support electricity generation, seawater desalination, cogeneration, and green hydrogen production. Beyond energy, nuclear technology could foster economic development, strengthen water security, and promote high-value sectors such as nuclear medicine and advanced agriculture.

Morocco’s engagement in international civil nuclear forums and financing initiatives demonstrates its intent to position itself as a credible player in the evolving global energy system. Civil nuclear energy is seen not as a replacement for renewables, but as a complementary pillar in a hybrid, resilient, and sustainable energy model.
