Morocco accelerates wind energy projects to strengthen energy independence by 2030
Morocco is accelerating investment in wind energy as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen energy independence and expand the role of renewable sources in its electricity mix. The country aims to have renewable energy account for 52% of its installed electricity generation capacity by 2030, reinforcing its position as one of Africa's leading clean energy markets.
The strategy includes the construction of new wind farms and the expansion of existing facilities, supporting Morocco's efforts to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels while improving long-term energy security. Thanks to its favorable geography, particularly along the Atlantic coastline and in the northern regions, Morocco possesses some of the region's strongest and most consistent wind resources.
As part of the national energy program covering the 2023–2027 period, authorities plan to add approximately 2.6 gigawatts of new wind power capacity through investments exceeding 36 billion Moroccan dirhams. The projects are expected to contribute significantly to the country's clean energy objectives and support economic development.
In parallel, the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has adopted a major investment plan for the electricity sector covering 2025–2030. The program includes the development of 12.5 gigawatts of additional renewable energy capacity, representing around 80% of all planned new electricity generation, with a significant contribution from private sector investors.
To accommodate the rapid expansion of renewable energy, Morocco is also upgrading its electricity transmission infrastructure. Expanding grid capacity will facilitate the integration of new wind and solar projects across the country while improving the reliability and flexibility of the national power system.
Several future wind projects are planned in regions with high wind potential, including Morocco's southern provinces. Wind power is also expected to play a central role in supplying electricity for green hydrogen and green ammonia production, sectors that are becoming increasingly important as Europe seeks reliable suppliers of low-carbon energy.
To enhance grid stability, Morocco is preparing large-scale electricity storage projects using battery technology, with a planned storage capacity of approximately 1,600 megawatt-hours. These investments will help balance renewable electricity generation and ensure a more resilient energy network as clean energy capacity continues to expand.
According to official figures, Morocco's installed wind power capacity reached approximately 2,373 megawatts by the end of 2024. Authorities aim to significantly increase this capacity over the coming years, positioning wind energy as a key pillar of industrial development, seawater desalination, green hydrogen production, and the country's broader transition toward a competitive and sustainable low-carbon economy by 2030.
