Moroccans celebrate UN's recognition of Sahara as Moroccan territory

Following the United Nations Security Council’s historic endorsement of Morocco's autonomy plan for the Sahara, celebrations erupted across major Moroccan cities, reflecting widespread national pride and joy. Cities such as Fes, Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, and Tangier witnessed vibrant displays of unity as citizens marked this pivotal moment affirming Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Sahara region.

In Fes, a city renowned for its cultural and historical significance, spontaneous marches filled iconic locations like Bab Boujloud Square and Mohammed V Boulevard. Civic organizations and youth groups organized rallies featuring banners that proclaimed “Sahara marocaine” alongside portraits of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Moroccan flags. Outdoor music performances and cultural programs further amplified the festive atmosphere.

Elsewhere, Rabat saw planned demonstrations near the parliament building, while youth gatherings were held along Casablanca’s Ain Diab corniche. In Marrakech, authorities prepared public spaces for fireworks displays to commemorate the occasion. Across the country, these events underscored a unified national sentiment emphasizing territorial integrity and celebrating the international community’s acknowledgment of Morocco’s claim.

The wave of public jubilation highlights the deep significance of the Security Council resolution for Moroccans. Many view this decision as a final, international validation of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and a crucial milestone in resolving the decades-long territorial dispute.
