Moroccan music icon Naïma Samih passes away at 70
The beloved Moroccan singer Naima Samih passed away on March 8, 2025, after a prolonged illness. Known for her unwavering dedication to the authenticity of Moroccan music, Samih carved a unique path in the music world, earning widespread admiration and the title of the "Lady of Modern Moroccan Song."
Born in 1954 in the vibrant neighborhood of Derb Sultan in Casablanca, Samih was raised in a conservative family. Despite not pursuing formal education beyond primary school, her passion for the arts became evident from an early age. Her love for music flourished during her youth, and she officially entered the artistic scene at just 16 years old. Her breakthrough came through the Moroccan television program Mawahib (Talents), hosted by Abdelnabi Jirari, in the early 1970s.
Samih's career was defined by her mastery in interpreting iconic songs that resonated far beyond Morocco’s borders. Her voice and artistry captivated generations, leaving an indelible mark on Moroccan musical heritage.
