Moroccan children demand action on education, health, and equality

Children across Morocco gathered in Rabat to demand stronger protection of their rights and actionable policies addressing their needs. The event, organized by the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) with UNICEF Morocco’s support, marked the culmination of a year-long national dialogue.

Voices from all corners of Morocco

The two-day consultation on June 13-14 built on regional consultations held across Morocco’s 12 regions since February 2023. Hundreds of children participated, sharing concerns such as unequal access to education, healthcare, and protection from violence. Representatives from each region presented their collective demands at the national level.

“Today, we raise our voices to deliver this call, firmly believing in and holding on to our right to be heard,” the children emphasized, urging for their dignity and best interests to be prioritized.

Education and health at the forefront

Education emerged as a key concern, with children calling for high-quality and inclusive learning opportunities. They stressed the need for equitable access to education, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Healthcare was another priority. The children highlighted the importance of comprehensive maternal care and proper medical support to ensure healthy development. They also voiced concerns about the lack of resources for children with disabilities, advocating for better access to interpreters and inclusive services.

Safety, play, and equality

The young advocates demanded protection from violence and neglect, both at home and in public spaces. They also called for safe, welcoming environments for play and social interaction—a crucial part of childhood.

Equality was a recurring theme. The children urged for special attention to be given to vulnerable groups, including migrant children, those with disabilities, and victims of violence. They proposed forming regional childhood networks to provide structured platforms for participation and collaboration.

A call for action

The children concluded their appeal by demanding legal guarantees for their right to participate in decisions affecting them. They urged the CNDH to remain an ally in their fight for rights, emphasizing that these must be realized through concrete action, not just promises.

Their message was clear: children’s rights are human rights, and achieving them requires urgency, commitment, and accountability.
