More than 3,000 Viking coins unearthed in Norway's largest hoard ever found

Two metal detector enthusiasts scanning an agricultural field near the village of Rena in eastern Norway have uncovered what archaeologists have confirmed to be the largest Viking-era coin hoard ever discovered in the country. Named the Mørstad hoard, the find has so far yielded more than 3,000 silver coins dating from the late tenth and early eleventh centuries, with excavations still ongoing.

The discovery began on April 10, when Vegard Sørlie and Rune Sætre pulled 19 silver coins from a field in the Østerdalen valley in Innlandet county and immediately recognized that the find warranted professional involvement. Within a week, archaeologists from the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage had unearthed several thousand additional coins. By late April, Innlandet county authorities announced that more than 3,150 coins had been catalogued, with the search for further artifacts continuing. Svein Gullbekk, a professor at the Museum of Cultural History at the University of Oslo, described the find as genuinely exceptional, noting that while previous Viking-era coin hoards containing around 2,000 pieces had been recorded, none had ever surpassed 3,000. "They have crossed a threshold," he said. "This is truly extraordinary."

The composition of the hoard offers a vivid window into the breadth of Scandinavian trade networks at the close of the Viking Age. Experts from the University of Oslo have identified English pennies minted under King Æthelred II and King Cnut the Great, German coins from the reign of Holy Roman Emperor Otto III, and older Danish and Norwegian pieces including some struck under King Harald Hardrada. The coins span a period from the 980s to the 1040s, and researchers believe the hoard was buried around 1047 to 1050, a period of political upheaval that coincided with Norway's transition toward its own national monetary system. Archaeologists believe the coins were originally stored in a leather pouch or similar organic container that degraded over centuries, allowing repeated plowing to scatter them across the field. Fragments of hack-silver, pieces cut from silver jewelry and used as a medium of exchange in the medieval period, were also recovered alongside the coins.

Gullbekk estimates that exploration of the site and its surrounding area will continue for at least several more seasons, raising the possibility that the final tally could exceed current figures. Archaeologists also plan to search for traces of a nearby settlement that might explain why such an enormous sum was buried in the Østerdalen countryside nearly a millennium ago. The combination of scale, geographic spread of origin, and precise dating makes the Mørstad hoard one of the most significant Viking-era discoveries in Scandinavia in recent decades.
