Moldova's President nominates financier Vasile Tofan as Prime Minister
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has nominated financier Vasile Tofan to serve as the country's next Prime Minister, signalling a move toward an administration focused on economic expertise and investment-led reforms.
The announcement was made during a press conference in Chisinau, where Sandu presented the 44-year-old investment executive as her choice to lead the government.
Investment executive selected to head government
Tofan is a senior partner at Horizon Capital, an investment firm with a strong presence in Eastern Europe. His professional background in finance and private investment is expected to shape the government's economic agenda at a time when Moldova continues to pursue structural reforms and closer integration with European institutions.
His nomination now begins the constitutional process required for the formation of a new government.
Long-time supporter of President Sandu
Tofan publicly backed President Sandu during the 2024 presidential election, aligning himself with her pro-reform and pro-European political platform.
His appointment is widely viewed as reinforcing the president's commitment to strengthening economic governance, attracting investment and maintaining fiscal stability amid regional geopolitical challenges.
Focus on economic reform
If confirmed, Tofan would assume office as Moldova seeks to accelerate economic modernisation while addressing inflationary pressures, energy security and investment needs.
The incoming government is also expected to continue advancing reforms linked to Moldova's European integration process, with economic resilience remaining one of the administration's principal priorities.
The nomination places an experienced financial executive at the centre of Moldova's policymaking as the country navigates a complex regional environment and pursues long-term economic transformation.
