Moldova appoints Osmochescu as acting prime minister after Munteanu’s sudden resignation
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has appointed Deputy Prime Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu as interim prime minister following the unexpected resignation of Alexandru Munteanu.
Osmochescu, who also serves as minister of economic development and digitalization, will assume his temporary duties on Wednesday under a presidential decree. His appointment comes after Munteanu stepped down on Friday, saying he could no longer continue in the role in line with his personal convictions.
Former international finance official takes over interim leadership
Before joining Moldova’s government, Osmochescu worked at International Finance Corporation, where he gained experience in international finance and private-sector development.
His background in economic policy and digital transformation is expected to shape his short-term role as Moldova manages a period of political transition.
Munteanu thanked Osmochescu for accepting the responsibility, saying he wished his successor success in carrying out the mission.
Government continues under temporary arrangement
The Moldovan government will remain in an interim capacity until parliament approves a new cabinet. Osmochescu is expected to chair a government meeting on Wednesday as authorities prepare for the next stage of the transition.
Sandu had announced plans to consult parliamentary groups before selecting a successor after Munteanu’s resignation.
Her pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) holds a majority in the 101-seat parliament, giving the party significant influence over the formation of the next government.
Political shift follows PAS electoral victory
Munteanu had been appointed prime minister after the September parliamentary election, where PAS secured a strong victory over a Russia-aligned opposition force and received a renewed mandate to govern.
The leadership change comes at a crucial moment for Moldova, which has been pursuing closer ties with the European Union while navigating political and economic challenges linked to regional instability.
Osmochescu’s interim appointment is expected to provide continuity while parliamentary discussions determine the composition of Moldova’s next full government.
